I watched Bowie’s videos that were released in January 2016, without knowing that he filmed them during his final stages of cancer and that he knew he had it but hadn’t told anyone, and that the videos were released 2 days prior to his passing.

A friend explained this while we were watching the videos, and I got a sudden profound appreciation for the video Black Star.

I realized Bowie was artistically saying goodbye and expressing his passing, while saying “although this has done this to me, it hasn’t taken my creativity away”.

I’ve always enjoyed his work, and had even watched The Labyrinth weeks before his passing without knowing what he was going through at the time… Labyrinth has been a childhood favorite movie of mine.

So in tribute to him, I decided on doing a army of customs. Just under 5 or so customs, most of them just various outfits from the movie Labyrinth and I  had a tiny g4 pony with really skinny legs, and singing male pony with a mustache and decided it could pose well for the one scene from Bowie’s Black Star video where he held up his book and his blindfold was removed. So I decided to do just this tiny Bowie Black Star custom.

Though I was deeply moved by the video that made me proud of him for being so strong and expressive, I did find myself getting depressed while looking at references for this pony. Once starting work on it, I decided there will be no prices put on the Bowie customs I create.

They will not be available, I’m just going to secretly gift them as I see fit or where that motivation lies~

So now that I’ve grieved the emotional process as to why this custom came to be, I will now go into craft work details~

Pony base, can’t remember the generation 4 male pony’s name but it’s the tiny singing one with the eyes closed and the mustache

I sliced the mustache off, sliced the top half of the mane off and the horn got in the way of fitting the removable blindfold on, so I chopped that off too

Painted mane and tail in various shades of grays and silver, glued down gray faux fur for the top of his mane. Removed original eyes and cutie mark with Acetone, repainted eyes in shape of Bowie’s eyes with blue eyes, and attempted some wrinkles throughout the face.

Painted him some nice sleek black pants. Sealed all the paint work in Varnish.

Painted the white under shirt, cut tiny ruffled ribbon trim for the sleeve cuffs and collar of the white undershirt. Cut and crafted black overcoat from a nice stiff black ribbon. Added dark gray rhinestone buttons on front of shirt.

Got out brown bias tape for the blindfold, cut 6 strands of beige ribbon and stitched them all on in overlapping layers, stitched some thick thread at the ends so it can tie on and off and put black rhinestones.

Book is cut and painted from a stiff gray ribbon, stitched and assembled with a painted black star rhinestone on the cover.

Cat girl doll- there is a girl in the video with a cat tail so I made a tiny doll of her. I used a one of a kind doll from my doo dad drawer (just means I may not get this exact doll in my possession again) so I cut off her pigtails, painted her a cream dress to resemble the girl from video, and repainted the socks and shoes. Repainted her eyes also and made a bit of a unibrow like the girl in video, and cut black leather that was only a suede side with a rough tattered texture, and cut slits in it so it resembles hair and glued it on her head. Sealed all paint work and glued a ragged strip of leather for her tail.

Skull- crafted from a bead with gold metal work and blue/red rhinestones glued on it to resemble jewels. Attempted to make an astronaut helmet from white leather, stitched it to give shape and painted silver acrylics along the front brim. Detailed in black rhinestones, attached to a larger silver beads with some leather wrapped around the neck.
